Ontario forest fires burned hectares of land larger than Greater Toronto Area in 2021

Ontario set a single-year record in 2021 for the area of land burned during the summer wildfire season, with over 793,000 hectares scorched mostly in the northwest — a span larger than the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and surpassing the previous high of 713,000 in 1995.
